Cygnet Social Care Sports Day celebrates inclusion and achievement

Cygnet Social Care’s annual Sports Day brought together more than 170 participants at Leicester’s Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium on Friday 19th September 2025, celebrating the eighth year of staff and people we support coming together.

The day featured accessible sporting activities designed to ensure everyone could participate at their own pace, including water races, ring toss, crazy golf, target throwing, penalty shoot-outs, long jump, rocket throwing and relay events. Fourteen Cygnet Social Care services participated, with teams arriving in personalised t-shirts they had designed themselves alongside creative team flags.

Celebrating individual achievement

All participants received medals and certificates recognising their involvement, with Cherry Tree House winning the best team flag competition.

Cate Ball, Regional Manager for Cygnet Social Care Midlands, said: “We have been hosting this event since 2016 and it has always been a great success. The residents talk about it for a long time afterwards and look forward to it each year.”

Creating community connections

The Sports Day represents more than competition – it creates connections between services and builds lasting memories for participants. Teams work throughout the year to plan and prepare for the event.

One participant, Owen from Broughton Lodge, captured the spirit of the day: “Sports day was good. I liked the relay race and we won.”

Another resident enjoyed the interactive nature of events, particularly “the water race because I got to splash Annabelle, our Deputy Manager.”

Supporting wellbeing through activity

Events like Sports Day demonstrate how accessible, inclusive activities can support wellbeing and create opportunities for meaningful engagement. The day concluded with treats from an ice cream van and the traditional competitive staff relay.

Lorraine Bostock, Deputy Home Manager of The Fields, explained: “Events like this make a huge difference to the people we support, enabling them to engage in activities in a really meaningful way, building team spirit and a real sense of fun.”

The success of the 2025 Sports Day reinforces Cygnet Social Care’s commitment to creating opportunities for meaningful participation and celebrating the diverse abilities of the people we support.

Cate Ball concluded the event, stating: “I would like to thank our CEO, Gareth Williams for continuing to support this event along with our amazing managers and staff teams that make this happen for the people we support each year.”
