Located on Central Avenue, Conifers supports adults with learning disabilities and autism, part of Cygnet’s Social Care division.
Individuals supported at the Derbyshire-based service asked in a community meeting for the main corridor to be brightened up and staff listened to their ideas and took action.
Working on an idea that suited each person’s individuality, the individuals we support decided on a scenic woodland walk mural, reflecting an activity they enjoy doing together.
Bethany Alexander, Activity Coordinator at Conifers, discussed the inspiration behind the painting.
“We live very close to Elvaston Castle and our residents enjoy going on frequent walks there as well as to the lake and through the woods. It was a good choice for the wall as a lot of them are also very fond of animals,” she explained.
“Choosing something that encompasses all of the individuals we support was vital as it ensured that everybody felt involved.”
At the residents’ request, Bethany created a woodland-themed mural filled with a variety of animals in eye-catching colours. The area is now bright and welcoming with the likes of a deer, rabbit and fox taking centre stage on the wall.
Bethany said: “The woodland scene has become a big talking point, and our residents especially enjoyed watching the drawing and painting take place. It has really brightened the corridor.
“This mural is very important for making our service feel more homely. It is a reminder to our residents that Conifers is their home and we will always listen to what they have to say and suggest.”
