Nottingham Patient Celebrated for Success in Prestigious Koestler Arts Awards

A patient at Cygnet Sherwood Lodge has been recognised in this year’s Koestler Arts Awards, receiving a Commended Award for his artwork titled Rainbow.

Alex, an individual supported at Cygnet Sherwood Lodge, has been attending weekly 1:1 Art Psychotherapy sessions with Senior Art Psychotherapist Samantha-Louise Parker since November 2023, and has long used art as a meaningful outlet to express himself and find calm.

He said: “Sessions help me to do my art and get out how I feel. Art keeps me busy and helps me relax.”

Earlier this year, Alex submitted five pieces of artwork to the Koestler Awards, which celebrate creative achievements among individuals in mental health settings across the UK. The awards aim to encourage personal growth, build skills, and promote confidence through artistic expression.

Samantha-Louise, described the value of the awards. She said: “It’s important to encourage involvement in the Koestler Awards as it’s a wonderful charity that has inspired many individuals within Cygnet Health Care to engage in the arts and transform their creative expressions.

“Individuals gain recognition for their sometimes hidden talents, which is so important, and they often experience a real sense of achievement when receiving an award or certificate.”

Alex’s winning piece, Rainbow, was created in response to this year’s theme, ‘Wings’. He interpreted the theme as symbolising freedom, progress and hope for the future. For him, the rainbow reflects his journey through hospital, his personal growth, and his aspiration for a successful move back into the community, ultimately finding the “treasure” at the end of his rainbow.

“I haven’t done collage before and really enjoyed using different materials and colours,” Alex said.

When the award results were announced in September, Alex received not only a Commended Award for Rainbow, but also four additional certificates for his other submissions.

He expressed pride in being able to share his artwork with others. He said: “I like to show other people what I do and how important art is to me. I am very proud of my award and hope I can enter more art into the awards next year.”

Samantha-Louise added: “Alex’s success highlights both his artistic talent and the personal progress he has made through creative expression.

“All of us at Cygnet Health Care congratulate Alex on this fantastic achievement.”
