Cygnet Hospital Colchester honours therapy dog after milestone visit

A mental health hospital in Colchester is celebrating its beloved pet therapy dog who has been described as “a bridge to emotional recovery”.

Cygnet Hospital Colchester, a 54-bed service for men with learning disabilities, autism or mental health needs, recently honoured therapy dog Lola, who marked her 50th visit to the hospital in Mile End.

The partnership with Pets As Therapy, a charity made up of pets and their owners who aim to bring joy to people’s lives, began in October 2024 after the death of the Cygnet Health Care service’s therapy guinea pig.

“One of our service users had said that watching the therapy guinea pigs had been the best moment of his life. We really saw the benefits, so when one passed away, Lola came to us and seamlessly filled the void, with a comforting presence,” explained Emmanuel Ozowara, Head of Occupational Therapy.

“Lola has served as a bridge to emotional recovery, breaking down barriers that human intervention alone sometimes cannot. She has become like family.”

Because of her rigorous background in agility and rescue work, Lola has brought an unmatched level of focus and adaptability to her therapy sessions at the Cygnet Health Care service.

Emmanuel added: “Some of the patients feel a sense of belonging when they see Lola. Interacting with her has offered a unique combination of emotional support, social connection, motivation, and therapeutic engagement.

“Lola brings a smile to the faces of most of our patients. Even when they are low in mood and not motivated, seeing Lola brightens their mood.”

Ian, an individual supported at Cygnet Hospital Colchester, is particularly fond of Lola.

He said: “Lola is a lovely and friendly dog, she makes me feel happy and relaxed when she comes to visit the hospital. I like to give her snacks and make her speak.”

To mark her incredible milestone, service users drew Lola pictures to celebrate, before walking her round the hospital grounds and feeding her treats. Her owner, Steve, also received a card of thanks to show the service users’ gratitude.
