Cygnet consultants elected into Royal College of Psychiatrists

Congratulations to our Cygnet consultants who have been elected into prestigious positions with The Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Four consultants have been appointed onto the General Adult and Rehabilitation Faculties as elected executive committee members.

Dr Gbolagade (Akin) Akintomide, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Hospital Hexham (left), and Dr Graeme Tosh, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Oaks (right), have been elected onto the RCPsych General Adult Faculty, which liaises with, and helps educate and inform members, colleagues within the College and external statutory and voluntary groups and agencies.

Dr Akintomide said: “I am honoured, delighted, and grateful to be elected to the General Adult Faculty Executive Committee at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am very thankful to all who voted and supported us.

“Having worked in psychiatry for many years with passion across various aspects of the field and also serving as a regional advisor for RCPsych, my aim in this role is to ensure that the placements of specialty doctors are flexible and adequately supported so they can achieve the competencies necessary to obtain the CESR on time.

“I also aim to improve the minimum standards required when advertising psychiatric doctor positions, address subtle but persistent media criticism of psychiatrists regarding serious incidents, and advocate for a fairer, more evidence-based approach.”

Additionally, Dr Omer Malik, Medical Director and Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Churchill (left), together with Dr Ajay Bhatnagar, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Lodge Lewisham (right), have been elected onto the Faculty of Rehabilitation and Social Psychiatry.

Dr Bhatnagar said: “‘I am so very excited and feel privileged with this appointment. I look forward to making a difference in service users’ lives, especially in social inclusion and community integration.

“My background in legal and medical intersections will be very valuable in encouraging partnerships with social sectors shaping discussions on psychiatric rehabilitation and navigating forensic pathways.”

We also congratulate Dr Mehtab Rahman, Consultant Psychiatrist at Cygnet Hospital Harrow, who has been appointed Chair for the CCQI’s QNPICU Accreditation Committee at the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

He said: “I have received many kind wishes and support and remain committed to supporting our services at Cygnet through the accreditation process in the future.”

The doctors will officially join their respective faculties in June.

Jon Van Niekerk, Cygnet Group Clinical Director and Chair of the RCPsych General Adult Faculty, celebrated their achievements and said: “The energy, expertise and fresh perspectives they will each bring will undoubtedly help shape the work of the College. I look forward to working with them and supporting them in their new roles.”
