The Tupwood Gate team celebrating being shortlisted

The team at Tupwood Gate Nursing Home in Caterham have been shortlisted for three national awards in recognition of its outstanding commitment to delivering compassionate, person-centred end-of-life care.

Part of Cygnet Social Care, Tupwood Gate has been named a finalist at the 2026 Palliative & End of Life Care Awards in:

  • The Palliative Care Team Award for Residential and Nursing Homes (Independent)
  • The Palliative Care Manager Award
  • The Nursing Home Provider Award

The team award celebrates exceptional teamwork in supporting people facing the end of life, recognising teams that make a meaningful difference to the quality of life of those living with serious illness. Manager Busi Mudimbu has also been shortlisted in the Care Manager category for demonstrating exceptional leadership skills and an ability to create a positive and supportive work environment for staff.

The service has also been shortliated in the Palliative Nursing Home Provider category, which celebrates care for people living and dying in later old age and recognises an innovative, quality driven, person centred nursing home provider that makes a real difference to the wellbeing and comfort of individuals in their end of life journey.

Tupwood Gate has built a strong reputation for creating a calm, welcoming and respectful environment where residents receive personalised support tailored to their individual wishes, needs and preferences. The impact of the team’s approach is reflected in the heartfelt feedback regularly received from relatives and loved ones.

One family member wrote: “My mother spent her final few months at Tupwood Gate. My family were all very happy with the way she was looked after. The management and staff are excellent. Everyone was friendly, caring and sensitive to my mother’s and our needs. Tupwood Gate took care of everything and ensured that she was always comfortable.”

Another relative praised the home’s caring culture, saying: “A really lovely home with staff who genuinely care about their residents. They unfailingly treat my mum with kindness and respect and I know she’s in safe hands, which is a huge relief.”

Families have also highlighted the dedication shown by staff during the most challenging times. One review noted: “When my husband’s health was failing he was well cared for in all respects and his care wishes respected. There is a warm homely atmosphere within the home.”

The home’s commitment to helping residents live meaningful and fulfilling lives extends beyond clinical care, with a varied programme of activities, entertainment and opportunities for families to spend valuable time together.

The team’s person-centred approach has also led to remarkable outcomes. In one case, a resident who arrived at Tupwood Gate on an end-of-life care pathway recovered significantly through the support and care provided by the team. Nearly three years later, she continues to enjoy an active life within the home, taking part in activities, engaging with others and no longer requiring palliative care support.

Busi Mudimbu, Home Manager at Tupwood Gate Nursing Home, said: “We are incredibly proud to have been shortlisted for three categories, it’s unbelievable. Supporting residents and their families through the most difficult and emotional moments of life is both a privilege and a responsibility that our team never takes for granted.

“Every day, our nurses, carers and wider colleagues go above and beyond to ensure that people receive compassionate, dignified and person-centred care, while helping families create precious memories with their loved ones. We believe that exceptional palliative care is about so much more than clinical support, it is about kindness, comfort, reassurance and helping people live as fully and meaningfully as possible.

“This recognition reflects the unwavering commitment, expertise and genuine warmth shown by every member of the Tupwood Gate team. We are honoured to be recognised alongside so many outstanding organisations and remain committed to providing the very highest standards of care for those who need us most.”

The winners of the Palliative & End of Life Care Awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Hilton Bankside in London on 2 July 2026.
