Planning for the trip began 6 months ago with Angela, the activity co-ordinator, researching all of the elements – travel, costs, risks, staff to accompany her and suitable accommodation. They found an apartment nearby to Disneyland that met the needs of Lizzie and the team members.
Knowing Lizzie well, staff decided to keep the trip a surprise and continue her usual routine in the days leading up to it, telling her in advance would have made her feel anxious about it.
When the day arrived she was invited into the office, where the team had prepared a social story explaining where she would be going, “her eyes lit up – she was so happy and excited, it was wonderful to see.” – Angela, activity co-ordinator.
After arriving at the airport and having a meal, they boarded the plane – Lizzie was very excited about it all, she loved the experience and was smiling from start to finish! The team had prepared timeline cards for each day that had pictures to show Lizzie what to expect and when.
When they arrived in Paris they visited the Eiffel Tower. Lizzie loved going to the top in the lift and seeing the view of the city, they took lots of photos before heading back down and enjoying a meal with a view of the tower.
On day 2 they walked to Disneyland, when they arrived it was all a bit overwhelming, but Lizzie took it in her stride and headed for the rides. They stayed at the park all day with lots of breaks for snacks and a rest. They enjoyed the lovely weather and some ice creams and Lizzie bought some Mickey Mouse ears.
After watching the parade they headed back to the apartment to take some time to relax and reset. Later that evening, they returned to the park to watch an amazing fireworks display – another highlight for Lizzie.
On the final day in Paris they enjoyed a picnic and some shopping before returning home. Both Lizzie and the support staff had a fantastic time and are looking forward to more trips in the future. Staff are very proud of how well she coped with all of the new experiences.
Broughton Lodge actively encourage positive risk taking and have found the successful trip has now opened up more opportunities for all the residents.
