Gledholt residents rally together to support local community

Gledholt in Huddersfield recently united to turn compassion into action by donating vital supplies to a local food bank.

Located on Greenhead Road, Gledholt is a community residential service for adults with learning disabilities, part of the Cygnet Social Care division.

Staff and the people they support teamed up to donate bags of much-needed items to The Welcome Centre, a food bank in Huddersfield.

The West Yorkshire care service usually takes part in Red Nose Day celebrations but decided to do something a little different this year, while still marking the occasion.

Millie Jackson, Activity Coordinator, explained the motivation behind their charitable efforts: “Rather than donating money, we wanted to give something to a charity a little closer to home. Everyone at Gledholt wanted to donate to our local food bank as it offers vital support to vulnerable people in our community.

“Some of our service users have utilised The Welcome Centre in the past, so it felt right to give back to this great service that is a credit to our local community.”

Service users worked hard to create their own donation box, using their crafting skills and keeping with the Red Nose Day theme, before filling it to the brim with a variety of items the food bank needed.

A handmade Red Nose Day donation box filled with food and household items, including cereal, nappies, toiletries and packaged goods, created by service users at Gledholt to donate to a local food bank.

Alongside the Cygnet Social Care service’s cook Diane Taylor, Millie delivered the box and numerous bags of donations to The Welcome Centre.

“The food bank was over the moon with this donation and Gledholt received a letter of thanks for everyone’s hard work,” explained Millie.

“It was a good opportunity for our service users to feel part of a bigger picture and support people in need. It was amazing for everyone to be involved in something so positive. Thank you to all who donated to this great cause!”
