Eight Cygnet Elms staff named finalists in National Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards

Cygnet Elms, a Birmingham care service which supports women with learning disabilities, is celebrating as eight members of its dedicated team have been announced as finalists in the Stars of Learning Disabilities and Autism Awards.

The annual awards recognise individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving the lives of people with learning disabilities and autism. This year, Cygnet Elms, on Streetly Road, has an impressive number of shortlisted nominees spanning a wide range of categories.

Physical Health Nurse Cheryl Hoskins has been shortlisted for the Spark of Innovation Award. Cheryl said she was proud to be nominated, noting that Learning Disability nurses “always think outside the box” to ensure people receive the support they need.

Diana White-Blake, Head of Care, is a finalist for the Head of People Award and described the recognition as “a pleasant surprise” that has inspired her to continue striving for excellence.

Assistant Psychologist Jade Myatt has been shortlisted for the Voice Amplifier Award. She said she was “honoured” to be recognised for her work in empowering people with learning disabilities and autism to have their voices heard. Staff Nurse Ram Bansal is a finalist in the Brilliant Learning Disability Nurse category and said he was “humbled” by the nomination, adding that “working with people with learning disabilities enriches my practice every day. Their strengths and individuality drive me to provide outstanding care, challenge inequalities, and continue growing as a nurse who always puts people first.”

Activity Coordinator Riccardo Brade has been shortlisted for the Above and Beyond Team Award and expressed his gratitude for the nomination, saying: “I appreciate the nomination and will continue to uplift and empower our service users to be the best and most authentic version of themselves.”

Senior Staff Nurse Roisin O’Brien, also nominated in the Brilliant Learning Disability Nurse category, described the recognition as deeply meaningful, calling her work “a privilege”. She added: “I’m committed to advocating for their rights, well-being, and independence. This recognition encourages me to keep striving for excellence in every interaction and every decision.”

Support Worker Sagal Sahid is a finalist for the Above and Beyond Team Award and said she feels inspired daily by the people she supports and her colleagues. “This recognition motivates me even more to keep delivering compassionate, person-centred care and to always go the extra mile,” she added.”

Support Worker Samira Mohamed, who has been with the service for nearly a decade, is shortlisted for the Superstar Support Worker Award. She credited her “amazing teammates and mentors” for supporting her journey, saying she was “grateful and honoured to be recognised.”

Sarah Jenks, the Cygnet Hospital manager, described her pride in the team and said it was worthy recognition for the work they do.

She said: “Our service is built on teamwork, compassion, and a shared commitment to providing the best possible support for the people we care for. These nominations recognise not only individual excellence but also the strength of our entire unit, where every person plays a part in creating a positive, inclusive, and empowering environment.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our colleagues for this incredible achievement. Each nominee represents the very best of our values; Integrity, Trust, Empower, Respect and Care. They are true stars and an inspiration to us all.”
