These scores are the result of a peer review visit to the hospital on 16th April 2015. The review covered two wards, Alvaston Ward, a specialist low secure service for women with a personality disorder and Litchurch Ward, a low secure service for men. Initial feedback from the review identified the following areas as key achievements:

  • The cohesive, supportive and positive ethos among staff at the unit
  • The involvement of friends and family who are also assisted financially when visiting the unit and attending meetings
  • Training opportunities, supervision and professional development for staff is protected and well maintained
  • The wide ranging access to provisions such as Massage Therapists, Hairdressers and an Activity Coordinator, all of which enable patients to maintain a life that reflects the community
  • The level of patient involvement at the service and the increased number of paid work opportunities for patients
  • The implementation of Restorative Justice and initiatives around patient responsibility and capability, in collaboration with the service’s Police Liaison Officer
  • Patient access to mobile phones with the service paying for monthly contracts was seen to be an instance of best practice and highly commended
  • The level at which patients are able to personalise their bedrooms was seen to be least restrictive and added to the homeliness of the bedroom areas

“Achieving a 95% compliance score clearly demonstrates the hard work and dedication the two ward teams have put in over the last 12 months. Coming soon after Alvaston Ward was awarded the prestigious Enabling Environments Award this result provides additional validation of the high quality service that we are striving to provide for our service users.”Mark Varney, Hospital Manager
