The Dundee-based service, which provides specialist high dependency complex care for individuals with learning disabilities, with or without autistic spectrum disorder, as well as mental health difficulties, is now ready to welcome patients to its newly expanded facilities.
Following a £2.2 million investment, the hospital has now added 8 new beds to its provision, with a further 2 self-contained flats scheduled to open later in 2025. This expansion brings new job opportunities for specialist staff to the local area.
Kerryanne Johnstone, Hospital Manager, said: “We are really proud of the new environment here at Cygnet Wallace Hospital. The expansion was designed to provide a balance of privacy, comfort and safety in a homelike atmosphere, providing more space for the patients to relax and engage with treatments which will provide them with the skills they need to move on and pave the way to a better future for them. It looks amazing. The additional beds will enable us to support more people that require more complex care, closer to their homes and support networks.
“Our patients were at the heart of the expansion and we were able to capture their ideas; they were able to choose colours and pick the theme for the decorative pieces, which is a Scottish wildlife theme, this has been beautifully integrated into the building throughout.”
The reaction from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. One patient commented, “Aww it’s just beautiful I love it,” while another said, “I really like the library and I’m looking forward to the reading group.” A third patient shared, “I’m happy, I love my new room. I want staff to cook for me my favourite dinners.”
All of our new and expanded settings are designed with wellness in mind, providing a safe and comfortable environment to promote successful recovery. Co-production has been at the heart of the expansion with Expert by Experiences (those with lived experience of mental health settings) providing feedback throughout.
