Cygnet Psychologist co-authors neuro-affirmative practice guide

Sarah Ashworth-Watts, Consultant Forensic Psychologist at Cygnet Grange, has co-authored a new handbook titled A Clinician’s Guide to Neurodivergence: Supporting a Neuro-Affirmative Form of Practice, which is due for publication this month by Routledge.

The book aims to support professionals across sectors in developing a more neuro-aware and neuro-affirmative approach to their work, promoting understanding, inclusion and equity for neurodivergent individuals.

Sarah explained: “Our aim was to bring together the experience, knowledge and resources of experts across a range of neurodivergent conditions into one practical guide. We wanted to help professionals consider the adaptations and accommodations that may be necessary to avoid the inequities that can often arise from neuro-normative or heteronormative practices.”

The handbook features contributions from a diverse group of professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and teachers, all with backgrounds in healthcare, criminal justice, medicine, education, and academia — including several colleagues from Cygnet.

Sarah added: “We hope the handbook will be valuable reading for students, researchers, clinicians, therapists, and medical and allied professionals alike.”
