Cygnet Hospital Wyke rated ‘Good’ across all areas following CQC inspection

Patients and carers have praised the support provided at Cygnet Hospital Wyke, with one patient describing it as the “best hospital they’ve been to”, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Cygnet Hospital Wyke, on Blankey Grange, Huddersfield Road, has been rated Good overall and Good across all five areas inspected – safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The 31-bed hospital provides acute, Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and rehabilitation support for men.

The CQC assessed the service from 29 to 30 April 2026 and inspectors found that patients and carers spoke highly of the service and said the care delivered by staff felt “safe and supportive.”

The report said: “The service was recovery-oriented and took a multidisciplinary approach where professionals genuinely implemented suggestions by their colleagues from other disciplines when working with patients.”

Patients told the CQC that they felt supported by staff and were positive about their experience at the hospital.

The report read: “Patients described the service as good, with some patients telling us it was the ‘best hospital they’ve been to’.”

Patients told inspectors that staff were available to talk to when they needed support, listened to them, and were caring and respectful. Patients also reported feeling safe on the wards and highlighted the variety of activities available to them.

The CQC said: “Patients told us that they felt the service empowered them to be more independent and live healthier lives. They spoke positively about their plans for the future and how the service was supporting them with these.”

Inspectors spoke with three carers, all of whom spoke positively about the care provided. Carers described staff as “amazing”, “brilliant”, “really open and communicative,” “helpful”, and “very kind and very respectful”.

One relative described their encounters with staff as “very reassuring”, adding “they are treating him like a human being”.

The report also highlighted the involvement of patients and carers in decisions about care and treatment. It read: “Both patients and carers told us they felt listened to and their requests and preferences were taken into account by staff at the service.”

Praising the care plans developed for patients, inspectors noted: “They demonstrated a holistic and recovery-oriented approach by covering a range of needs, including supporting patients to access the community whilst in hospital in a way that was meaningful to them.”

A key strength highlighted by inspectors was the work taking place by the occupational therapy team to help patients develop greater independence and prepare for life after hospital. Praising the positive relationships between staff and patients, the CQC said: “During our inspection we observed warm interactions between staff and patients.

“Patients and carers we spoke with told us that staff were kind, helpful, inclusive and supportive.”

The inspection also highlighted the experience and culture of the staff team at Cygnet Hospital Wyke. The CQC said: “The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.”

“Staff across the service described a team-based approach and told us they felt supported by colleagues. They also described feeling proud of their work.”

Leadership was also praised by the CQC, with inspectors finding that leaders “lead effectively” with “integrity, openness and honesty.”

The regulator also found that patient and clinical areas were clean, well maintained and developed with input from patients.

Matthew Ellis, Hospital Manager at Cygnet Hospital Wyke, said: “This Good rating across all five areas is a positive reflection of the work taking place across Cygnet Hospital Wyke every day. The CQC’s findings recognise Cygnet Hospital Wyke’s focus on recovery, increasing independence, involving patients and carers in decisions, and preparing people for life beyond hospital.

“It is particularly pleasing to see the feedback from patients and carers reflected so clearly in the report, as their experience of the service is central to what we are trying to achieve.

“The comments about supporting people to become more independent and prepare for their future are especially important. Our role is not simply to support someone during their admission, but to help them develop the confidence, skills and strategies they need for the next stage of their life.

“I am also proud that the CQC recognised the strength of our multidisciplinary approach and the way colleagues work together and learn from one another. Creating an environment where colleagues feel supported ultimately helps us provide a better experience for the people we support.

“I would like to thank everyone at Cygnet Hospital Wyke for their continued hard work and commitment, and particularly our patients and their families and carers for the feedback they shared with inspectors. We will use this report as a foundation to continue building on the progress we have made and achieving positive outcomes for the people we support.”
