Cygnet Hospital Sheffield’s sweet success for Comic Relief

The mental health hospital in Sheffield turned up the fundraising heat with a bake sale and pyjama day for a Comic Relief fundraiser.

Staff and individuals supported at Cygnet Hospital Sheffield banded together to raise almost £400 for Comic Relief.

The charity tackles poverty and social injustice worldwide, whilst supporting those facing immediate hardships.

Service users on Spencer Ward, a low secure service for women with mental health needs, and Pegasus Ward, an acute service for young people aged 12-18, were instrumental in planning the fundraiser and helping to bake and then sell the sweet treats.

Alex Brocksom, Occupational Therapist on Pegasus Ward, highlighted the success of the charity fundraiser.

They said: “Here at Cygnet Hospital Sheffield, we have fundraised for many charities before and raised significant amounts through bake sales in the past so this was an easy choice. The young people we support on Pegasus Ward also enjoy baking and it was a real boost in their confidence seeing people buy their sweet treats.

“There was a feeling of accomplishment and excitement in giving back to charity. It is meaningful for these young people to offer their help, despite being in hospital, and it’s really empowering for them to know they can still help people.”

The Cygnet Health Care staff and service users also dressed in their pyjamas or in something red to keep donations rolling in.

Kerry Booth, Head Occupational Therapist at Cygnet Hospital Sheffield, said: “We would like to thank everyone, from service users to staff to families, for their support and contributions. It was great for everyone to be engaged in the fundraiser and develop their skills in a fun and rewarding way.

“There was a huge sense of pride and everyone had such a laugh through the day. It was fantastic from start to finish.”
