Cygnet Hospital Derby celebrates Pride

On Friday 23rd August Cygnet Hospital Derby’s Recovery College hosted an event celebrating Pride which included the Pride of Cygnet Derby Awards.

The event was attended by service users, staff and invited guests from NHS England’s LGBT Health Team. The event included live music, games and dancing.

A series of stalls featured items such as wristbands and mobile phone cushions, the latter having been made especially for the day by service users from Rampton Hospital. Money raised from the stalls and a raffle draw was donated to Derbyshire LGBT+. In total £115 were raised for the charity.

The Pride of Cygnet Derby Awards were judged and presented by NHS England’s Olivia Butterworth. The awards were split into three categories, the Supporter Awards, the Challenger Award and the Mark Britton Proud of Me Award.

The Supporter Award was won by Sophie Thomas, Assistant Psychologist, for her work in producing a coming out book for staff. Sophie also plans to co-produce a book with and for service users.

The Challenger Award was won by a service user on Wyvern Ward for her work with Derbyshire LGBT+ to raise awareness and educate people on Transgender. She has arranged for courses to be delivered by Derbyshire LGBT+ at the hospital’s Recovery College and will be telling her story as part of the courses.

The Mark Britton Proud of Me Award was won by a service user on Alvaston Ward who told her story of overcoming some difficult times in her life to become the woman she is today.

The day was a huge success and we’d like to thank everyone who took part for making it such a great day.
