Cygnet Hospital Blackheath awarded new accreditation

The Tyler Ward team is wearing uniforms and ID lanyards as they gather outside to celebrate Cygnet Hospital Maidstone receiving QNPICU accreditation from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. One person in the centre holds a framed accreditation certificate.

A ward at Cygnet Hospital Blackheath in London has successfully achieved a prestigious accreditation, with staff praising the team dynamic as “like a big family”.

Tyler Ward, a 14-bed specialist PICU for men with acute mental health needs, has received its Quality Network for Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (QNPICU) accreditation.

QNPICU is a quality improvement network for psychiatric intensive care services in the UK run by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Tyler Ward underwent a peer review where a team assessed standards of care, current facilities, standards of documentation and health records, environmental features, and staff training qualifications, support and supervision.

Positive feedback from the peer review report includes:

  • The staff team’s ability to “work together cohesively and offer support to one another” was praised with one staff member referring to the team dynamic as “like a big family”.
  • The service has been involved in numerous quality improvement (QI) initiatives and has included service users in the planning of such projects.
  • Service users reported positive experiences and explained “they feel listened to by staff” and “feel safe on the ward”.
  • Feedback from a carer commended the support provided from the staff, who helped answer any questions they had. One carer said: “I am happy with the care and Ward Manager.”

Rebecca Fordwor, Hospital Manager at the Cygnet Health Care service, said: “I am delighted with the fantastic news that Tyler Ward has achieved this accreditation. This is a significant achievement and a testament to the hard work, commitment, and professionalism of the entire Cygnet Hospital Blackheath team.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all staff across the ward, our service, and the wider MDT and support teams for their contributions and ongoing dedication to delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate care.”
