Cygnet Heathers Gains Triangle of Care Accreditation

Cygnet Heathers in West Bromwich which cares for men with brain injuries has won an accreditation for the work it does with the families and loved ones of patients.

Cygnet Heathers, a 20-bed neuropsychiatric hospital for men with mental health difficulties and acquired brain injuries, has successfully achieved the Triangle of Care Star 1 Award, showcasing their commitment to involving and supporting carers in a neuropsychiatric setting.

In 2023, Cygnet became the first independent provider of health and social care services to be accredited by the Carers Trust Triangle of Care programme. Now the hospital, on Grout Street, has become the latest Cygnet Health Care service to achieve the one-star accreditation, meaning staff have successfully demonstrated their commitment to supporting carers.

The Triangle of Care is a quality improvement scheme for health and social care providers that promotes safety, recovery and wellbeing by including and supporting unpaid carers.

The panel, which reviewed the service in May, said the Cygnet Health Care service has “established a strong framework for identifying and supporting carers, ensuring their voices are heard throughout the care pathway.” Assessors said there was a “positive carer culture” at the service.

Many positive areas of practice were identified in the review, including:

  • The hospital’s approach to regular communication with family members, ensuring they are well informed about their loved one’s care.
  • All staff are trained in carer awareness, fostering a culture that values the role of carers in patient care.
  • Cygnet runs masterclasses on the importance of carers, with senior staff and carers involved in delivery.
  • The hospital has established policies to support confidentiality and information sharing with carers
  • Cygnet Heathers has appointed multiple carer leads to ensure consistent support and engagement with carers. The panel noted the importance of these roles in fostering a supportive environment.
  • Carers receive a thorough introduction to services and treatment pathways, with a variety of information available to support their understanding.
  • Carers are supported through various initiatives, including drop-in sessions, signposting to local services and the hospital organises events to engage with them.

Hospital manager Hayley Walker said: “We are very proud to have received this accreditation. It shows the dedication our team have towards acknowledging carers and the vital role they play in the care of our patients.

“This is not the end, we will continue improve in our carer engagement and ensure the Triangle of Care principles are embedded in our service and that we offer the best care possible to both our service users and their loved ones.”

Mary Patel, Triangle of Care programme lead at Carers Trust, said: “There is a clear commitment at Cygnet Heathers to support carers. Staff have shown they are working hard to ensure carers are recognised and supported as equal and expert partners in care. At Carers Trust, we are looking forward to working together on their continuous improvement journey.”
