Cygnet Brunel hosts vibrant multicultural celebration showcasing ‘Unity in Diversity’

The team at Cygnet Brunel celebrating their multicultural day

Staff and service users at Cygnet Brunel recently came together for a spectacular cultural celebration, transforming the hospital into a “global village” filled with food, music, and traditions from around the world.

The Multicultural Networking International Cooking Competition and Cultural Celebration, held on 7 April, brought together colleagues from across the South West and wider Cygnet Health Care network to celebrate the rich diversity within the organisation.

Organised by Cygnet’s Multicultural Network (MCN) ambassador Monjolaoluwa (Jogzie) Ogunsina, the event at Cygnet Brunel, on Crow Lane in Henbury, featured food stalls representing a wide range of cultures, with staff preparing and sharing traditional dishes while dressed in cultural attire. Each participant introduced their dishes, explaining their origins, ingredients, and the significance of their traditional clothing.

The hospital atrium was filled with music from across the globe, as well as interactive activities that encouraged attendees to learn more about each other’s heritage. Services from across Cygnet also attended, highlighting the diversity that exists not only within Cygnet Brunel, but across the wider organisation.

Cygnet Brunel, a 32-bed hospital in Bristol, supports men with acquired brain injuries and neuropsychiatric conditions. The event welcomed both staff and service users, creating an inclusive and uplifting atmosphere that embodied what the team proudly refers to as “Brunel Magic.”

Jamie Green, Hospital Manager at Cygnet Brunel, said: “Events like this truly bring our values to life. Seeing colleagues and service users come together to celebrate their cultures with such pride and openness was incredibly special.

“Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and days like this strengthen the relationships, understanding and trust that underpin the compassionate care we provide. The ‘Brunel Magic’ was on full display, and it’s something we are all very proud of.”

Monjolaoluwa (Jogzie) Ogunsina, MCN Ambassador and organiser of the event, added: “Food is a powerful way to bring people together and share stories. This celebration gave everyone the opportunity to showcase their heritage, learn from one another and build meaningful connections.

“By strengthening cultural understanding and inclusivity within our teams, we’re also supporting more personalised, compassionate care for the people we support every day.

“The celebration not only highlighted the wide range of cultural backgrounds within the team, but also reinforced the importance of inclusion in delivering high-quality care. By creating opportunities for connection and shared experiences, the event helped foster a deeper sense of community and belonging for everyone involved.

“From the aroma of international cuisine to the vibrant display of traditional dress, the day was filled with colour, laughter and togetherness, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.”
