Group Internal Audit Manager, Dan Simpson, organised the spectacular event, with around 400 colleagues across Central Services, Health Care and Social Care services participating. In total 30 teams travelled to Goals Coventry for the extravaganza.
Cygnet Hospital Sheffield emerged victorious for the third year in a row, with Cygnet Victoria House taking second place in this year’s competition.
Stacey Burgess, Pegasus Ward Manager at Cygnet Hospital Sheffield, said: “We went for the win from the very first game. Undefeated until the end, these boys have worked magic and run their feet off. Cygnet Hospital Sheffield came first for the third year in a row, taking home the trophy.”
Players from Sheffield also won the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament. Stacey added: “Well done to Umar Hussein for winning Player of the Tournament, and well done to Mustaqeem Opakunle for scoring the most goals. We couldn’t be prouder of you guys.”
Lee Hammon, Cygnet’s Chief Commercial Officer, has been involved in the event since its inception two decades ago. He said: “The 2026 event was a truly special one, and the best yet. 30 teams from across Cygnet joined us, spanning our hospital, residential and supported living divisions. All games were played with an appropriate balance of competition and respect.
“Many congratulations to Cygnet Hospital Sheffield for lifting the trophy for the third time, and to the newcomers from Cygnet Victoria House for reaching the final against tough competition.
“I have played all 20 tournaments since 2006. The event has always been special for me – not just because of the football itself, but it’s a chance to meet and interact with a large number of our staff who are delivering compassionate quality care day after day on the front line, and across all departments.
“The level of positive team-building that I witness every year is remarkable. I am proud to be part of such a company.”
Although he was not in the winning side this year Lee did at least have the consolation, not for the first time, of coming away with the Golden Glove award.
Lynn McGhee, Hospital Manager at Cygnet Churchill said: “I had a fabulous day at Cygnet’s annual football tournament with my new team from Cygnet Churchill. It wasn’t our day to win, but we had a great day out having fun together and it was a great opportunity for me to get to know everyone better. Our team played so well.
“Huge thanks to Daniel Simpson for organising the event. It’s mind-blowing how many people took part today, and it must have been a true challenge to pull this together. Looking forward to the next one, and hoping we can bring that trophy home next time!”
