Trinity Lodge resident recognised with Learner of the Year award for supporting fellow students

An individual supported at Trinity Lodge in Lockerbie has been recognised for his kindness and dedication after receiving a ‘Learner of the Year’ award at Carlisle College.

Robert Wilson, who has been studying a drama course at Carlisle College for the past two years, was presented with the Learner of the Year – Help and Support Award in recognition of the encouragement and support he consistently gave to fellow students throughout the academic year.

Robert, who has a learning disability, said the award win has given him “the confidence to achieve anything”.

While developing his own acting and performance skills, Robert became known for helping classmates learn dance routines, memorise lines and build their confidence. College staff praised his patience, compassion and positive attitude, describing him as an upbeat and encouraging presence who made a lasting impact on both his peers and the wider college community.

Robert is a resident at Trinity Lodge, on Townhead Street, which is part of the Cygnet Social Care division and is a specialist residential service for adults with learning disabilities.

The award celebrates students who go above and beyond to support others, and Robert was selected for the difference he made to classmates from across the college, many of whom became close friends during his time on the course.

Speaking about receiving the award, Robert said: “I just love helping people with their acting and dancing because I genuinely enjoy it.

“I have the confidence and belief now that I can achieve anything.”

Lorraine Platt, Service Manager at Trinity House and Lodge, said everyone at the service was incredibly proud of Robert’s achievement.

“Robert has worked so hard over the past two years and has grown in confidence through his time at college. The recognition he has received reflects the kindness, patience and understanding he shows to everyone around him. We couldn’t be prouder of everything he has achieved.

“Robert’s success highlights the positive impact that further education can have in building confidence, friendships and independence, while his willingness to support others has earned him admiration from both staff and fellow students alike.

“His award marks a fitting recognition of his caring nature and commitment to helping others succeed, making him a valued member of both the Carlisle College community and Trinity Lodge.”
