The Fields wins national award for Social Hub project

The Fields team collect the award on stage at the Housing with Care awards

Cygnet Social Care is celebrating a national win at the Housing with Care Awards after scooping the Tenant Co-Production award in recognition of its social hub project at The Fields in Sheffield.

Arcade games, sensory lighting and pool tables have helped to transform clinical spaces into new ‘social hubs’ across nearly 40 Cygnet services as part of a unique collaboration between service users and staff. The ‘social hubs’ have seen unused spaces given a stunning makeover in an effort to provide service users with a safe space where they could relax and socialise together. They have been co-produced, designed and installed by staff and service users working together.

The Fields, a residential service in Sheffield for adults with learning disabilities, was the first Cygnet Social Care site to unveil a social hub in 2025 and last week, the project helped Cygnet Social Care to scoop the Tenant Co-Production award at the Housing with Care Awards.

Working in genuine partnership with residents and Experts by Experience, the team co-created a space that reflects individual interests and needs, from arcade machines and a nail bar to a sensory hideaway. The project has not only enhanced the environment but empowered residents to shape their home and pursue their passions.

Importantly, the initiative demonstrates how co-production can deliver meaningful, sustainable change. Residents were involved at every stage, from initial ideas through to design and delivery, ensuring the hub is fully accessible and inclusive. The project has also enabled individuals to rediscover skills and interests, including one resident who now uses the space to continue his passion for hairdressing, promoting independence, confidence and a sense of purpose.

The manager of The Fields, Anne-Marie Williams, said: “We are all absolutely delighted to have won this award.

“This recognition belongs to our residents. The Social Hub is a direct result of their ideas, creativity and collaboration. It shows what can happen when people are truly listened to and involved in decisions about their lives. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together.

“The hub is so well-used and really is making a positive difference to our residents, it’s an incredible space and we are so proud at the recognition we have received for working in genuine partnership with those we care for.”

Judges praised the initiative and said: “Cygnet Social hubs are transforming recreational spaces across multiple services with coproduction involvement.

“Spaces are well planned, inclusive and have a range of thoughtful activities that clearly add to the quality of life of the adults with learning disabilities, that they work with, in spaces which are safe, supported and engaging.

“Cygnet Social Hubs demonstrate a strong commitment to co-production by actively involving people with lived experience in the design, development and delivery of recreational and social spaces across multiple services. The project provides clear examples of how people’s views, ideas and experiences have shaped the environments and activities on offer.

“The resulting spaces are inclusive, welcoming and thoughtfully designed, offering a range of opportunities that enhance wellbeing, connection, independence and quality of life for adults with learning disabilities.

“What particularly stood out was the scale of involvement, the diversity of people engaged in the process, and the tangible impact on those using the spaces. The hubs create environments that are safe, supported and engaging, whilst promoting choice, participation and belonging.”
