Cygnet Hospital Derby has three projects in the final – in the “Recovery and the Arts”, “Health and Wellbeing” and “Outstanding Service User Achievement” categories:

“Helping Others be Positive” – Nominated for a Recovery and the Arts Award
D, service user from Wyvern Ward, has been nominated for a recovery song and presentation he has written. About being nominated, D said I created a song and presentation because I felt its helpful for others to be positive. It means a lot to know that my song and presentation is in the top 5.”

“Positive Box and Meeting” – Nominated for a Health and Wellbeing Award
S, service user on Wyvern Ward, said this about the project: “We wanted to create positive relationships on the ward and support each other so we decided to have a positive box. Anyone can put in a comment about anyone and we read them out on a Friday and clap to commend people. It makes us feel good if we get a comment.”

“Service User Led Staff Induction” – Nominated for an Outstanding Service User Achievement Award
Service users are already involved in interviewing staff, but wanted to take this further and support staff to work more effectively with service users on the ward; so the service user led staff induction booklet was born. Service user S said “I feel jubilant, proud and amazed that we have been recognised” and D added “I am proud of what we have achieved and to be a finalist.”

Cygnet Hospitals Bierley and Wyke also each have a nomination in the final, one in “Recovery and the Arts” and one in “Health and Wellbeing”:

“The Big Blue Music Festival” – Nominated for a Recovery and the Arts Award
In the summer of 2015 a music festival was organised by service users at Cygnet Hospital Bierley for all service users across the hospital and to raise money for charity. The event was a huge success and on being involved, service users said “It was awesome playing in the band” and “Playing drums as part of the band has assisted my recovery, giving me more confidence”

“The Risk Cafe” – nominated for a Health and Wellbeing Award
A new and more engaging way of addressing risk collaboratively. One service user fed back: “The discussion about moving on from hospital was quite anxiety provoking, I hadn’t realised there was so much to consider, but the support I got from the other patients in the group has really helped.

Cygnet Health Care would like to congratulate all the service users nominated for the above projects and wish them every success for the final! The awards ceremony is to be held at Silverstone on Wednesday 27th April 2016 – for more information please visit www.nsua.org or email [email protected].
