Cygnet Hospital Sheffield CAMHS Sports Day

Service users from our CAMHS services at Cygnet Hospital Sheffield recently enjoyed a sports day at one of the local parks in the city. In this special report, written by one of the service users who took part, we get a unique and witty perspective on the day.

If you fancied a walk in Norfolk Park on Wednesday 17th August then you’d be in for a relative surprise as a group of teenagers deemed a danger to themselves were running in a field and this time the staff weren’t chasing them.

It was sports day at Cygnet and patients and staff from Peak and Haven ward were participating in numerous sports events featuring trying to get the microphone off patients, trying to find your own water bottle and awkwardly glancing around looking for someone from your ward to sit with. The day was a success in everything especially the dodgeball in which everyone just enjoyed trying to hit that one member of staff (or patient) they don’t like.

The main events were basketball, egg n spoon, 3 legged race, sprint, dodgeball, sack race, tug o’war, and a noughts and crosses sprint game. The latter being a producer of many staff falling over to everyone’s enjoyment (that’s pretty much what we all went for to be honest). The weather was just as good as the day itself luckily.

The two Teams A and B sweltered as a tediously long basketball match teetered on eating in to some of the planned events such as beat the goalie etc. Team A eventually won, though a mid-game name switch resulted in confusion. In true `everyone’s a winner` style everyone was awarded a medal. Though to be fair everyone was a decent sport and no one was physically assaulted by a patient which I will celebrate any day of the week.

All in all thank you to Ed and Jon for putting the sports day on. The barbeque following was just as good thanks to the chef, Dean. And RIP to my white jeans that now have a grass stain on them. I (and I expect everyone else will agree) look forward to the next sports day. Patients from both wards, sports, staff and patients equalled a brilliant day. The man of the match? Sturdy who nailed the mid-life crisis/ “I’m not old I can pull off a tracksuit” look to a tee.
