New garden murals at Trinity House

New mural in the garden at Trinity House

Butterflies, pretty flowers and well known children’s characters are just some of the characters and designs which now adorn the garden walls at one of our social care services in Scotland after staff listened to feedback from residents who wanted to re-decorate the outdoor space.

Following requests from the residents, staff member Claire at Trinity House led a project to paint the garden walls with each resident’s favourite image or character integrated into the design.

Trinity House on Carlisle Road in Lockerbie, is part of the Cygnet Social Care division and provides a specialist residential service supporting adults with learning disabilities and complex needs.

The inspiration for painting the garden walls came from the monthly service user meeting. The residents wanted to liven up the garden, and Claire, along with Kerry Gibson, the Activity Coordinator, took on the task of painting the walls. They printed pictures of the residents’ ideas, and the residents then chose their preferred designs. Claire worked to incorporate all the requests and to personalise the project.

The residents are delighted with the outcome and they are thrilled to see their favourite things incorporated onto the garden walls.

A mother whose son is a resident at the service said: “The staff painted two of his favourite characters, Ellie and Elvis, on the garden wall for him.

“This was such a caring and lovely thing to do. I know that my son is so well looked after and loved. What more can a mum ask for, he is so happy.”

Lorraine Platt, the Service Manager at Trinity House, said: “Everyone finds the wall very therapeutic and you can see something different each time you look at it. The initiative is very person-centred and has been received with a lot of positivity.

“We are now planning to initiate a similar project at Trinity Lodge because the residents there also want their garden painted. Meetings and planning are already in progress.”
