90% of service users and residents at Sheffield Day Services are on a modified diet due to swallowing difficulties. This can make dining out quite challenging with individuals being limited to what they can choose from the menu.
Helen Ullyatt, service manager of Sheffield Day Services, explains, “When an individual has swallowing difficulties or difficulty chewing food, dining out can be quite challenging and very limiting to what they can choose from the menu.
“We have always found places to eat have been accommodating and assist us as much as possible, but then last week the service users and staff went to our local pub the Angel in Woodhouse. The staff were blown away with the level of service both they and the service users received.”
Anne, the chef at The Angel, is dedicated to providing homely cooked food that everyone can enjoy, no matter what their dietary requirements. Anne has made sure the menu at the Angel is inclusive for all.
Following their visit Helen contacted Anne to ask her about her passion for cooking great food that can be enjoyed by everyone. Anne said, “I started catering at an early age and I have been fortunate to have worked with some very talented Chefs/Cooks throughout my career, this has enabled me to pick up tips along the way.
“I developed a flair for textured modified food. I went to Coventry University on a course. This has enabled me to have the knowledge and experience to introduce this into my new venture at the Angel Public House in Woodhouse, Sheffield.
“I can offer a service to the more vulnerable customers who would normally not have the opportunity to dine out.”
The service users at Sheffield Day Services will certainly be visiting again with Helen saying, “We are delighted to have Anne and the Angel public house in our community and we will definitely be spreading the word.”
