Two determined women from Hawkstone in West Yorkshire raised vital funds for a charity that supports people with cancer after completing a challenging run powered by their unwavering teamwork.

Lisa Laycock and Ciara Cullen took on a 10-kilometre charity run, raising £500 for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer Research UK helps to save lives by preventing, controlling and curing cancer. The charity helps to fund scientists, doctors and nurses to work towards prevention, diagnosis and treatments to help beat cancer sooner.

The duo work at Hawkstone, a residential care service in Bradford for adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs.

The Cygnet Social Care workers were fuelled by the personal motivation of those close to them being affected by cancer.

Administrator Ciara explained: “Cancer affects everyone, lots of people have someone in their circle of family and friends who has been impacted by it. The charity funds such important research that has the power to make a positive impact on many people’s lives if they have a family member living with the disease.”

On Saturday 13 June, the running duo took to Thornes Park in Wakefield and battled through a thrilling 10-kilometre race, completing it side-by-side.

Lisa, the Deputy Manager at Hawkstone, said: “This was a cause close to my heart so I wanted to challenge myself and prove I could do it. It wasn’t easy and there were some moments where it really pushed us, but together we made it to the finish.”

Ciara agreed: “The distance felt like a massive hurdle to overcome. Teamwork spurred me on. This was Lisa’s idea and I wouldn’t have participated without her. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do the final sprint finish if she wasn’t right there next to me.”
