Two London doctors shortlisted for prestigious awards

Dr Malik and Dr Misra

Congratulations to Dr Omer Malik and Dr Angela Misra, two London-based doctors who support individuals with mental health needs, who have been shortlisted for the annual Royal College of Psychiatrists London Division Awards.

The RCPsych Awards mark the highest level of achievement in psychiatry. These awards have been organised to celebrate excellence in Mental Health Care provision in the London region.

Dr Malik, Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director at Cygnet Churchill, has been shortlisted for Educator of the Year 2024 and his colleague, Dr Misra has been shortlisted for SAS Doctor of the Year.

Finalists in the Educator of the Year award will have shown excellence in medical education contributing to the training of medical students and doctors at all stages of their training as well as colleagues in the MDT.

Dr Malik said: “I am highly privileged and humbled to have been nominated. The short-listing by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for this esteemed award is an acknowledgement of my contribution and a big encouragement for me to continue to improve and innovate in Education.

“I always strive to continue to improve but it is important to celebrate. I look forward to attending the RCPsych awards ceremony as a celebration and a sense of belonging to RCPsych community. I am passionate about teaching, co-production, quality improvement, simulation learning and supporting my fellow doctors with their career progression.

“I am keen to involve carers and service users in shaping the direction of our learning, so that we can continue to improve the holistic patient centred care.

“I would like to thank my Cygnet Churchill colleagues and Cygnet Health Care as an organisation for being ever so supportive, encouraging and helpful.”

The winner of the Specialist and Associate Specialist (SAS) Doctor award will have shown clinical excellence and exemplary patient care and raised the positive image of psychiatry in London across the rest of medicine and society. As well as being ‘kind, compassionate and respectful’, they will have demonstrated innovation in clinical practice and service development and been a positive role model for the rest of the psychiatric profession.

On her nomination, Dr Misra said: “I feel very privileged to have been nominated and shortlisted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for this prestigious award.

“I have a longstanding passion for Quality Improvement Projects which are clinically and operationally orientated and I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity at Cygnet Churchill by my Medical Director, Dr Malik, and Senior Management Team to get involved with a number of such projects.

“These include: Physical Health Management, On-call referral screening protocols, Inter-disciplinary Teaching and being a Carer’s Champion Lead. I have also been fortunate enough to have represented Cygnet Health Care at the International Quality and Safety Forum in April 2024 where I presented the Pilot Rehab Care Plan Project.

“I want to thank the Cygnet Churchill Team for all their support and ongoing dedication to our patients.”

Dr Suhana Ahmed is Chair of the London Division of the RCPsych. She said: “The London Division would like to thank all those who made a nomination this year. The standard was extremely high and the judges had an exceptionally difficult job to shortlist each category. It is fantastic and rewarding to see the amazing work being undertaken in mental health care services in London.”
