Summit School celebrates Children’s Mental Health Week

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week 2023, Summit School at Cygnet Joyce Parker arranged a wide variety of activities based around this year’s theme of ‘Let’s Connect’.

The teaching staff provided a range of opportunities for young people throughout the week, with each day focussed around a different theme. On Monday the young people were invited on a school trip to Coombe Abbey where they enjoyed an ‘Art in the Park’ session. The young people were encouraged to make a small sculpture to leave in the park using clay and natural materials. They also took the opportunity to feed the ducks while they were there!!

On Tuesday the students decorated some pebbles as part of a worldwide movement to shares positivity by creating art on the pebbles hiding them in a public place and then re-hiding them as they are found. Students have did an amazing job with their pebbles, they will be hidden around the school grounds for students to find while on leave and then re-hide them for the next student to find. This initiative will support the students to connect with each other across the service.

On Wednesday the theme was ‘circles of connection’ for the science project. The young people created a rainbow of carnations using transpiration and then decorated the staff room with the results. A young person on Dragon ward said “In Science today, we used different food colourings to dye the water with the hope of seeing the petals of the flowers change colour. This change in colour shows transpiration in plants and we were able to produce and arrange a rainbow of flowers. The idea of such an enjoyable practical served as an effective form of motivation to stay focussed on and complete the challenging Chemistry calculations from the previous lesson.”

Friday saw the young people and staff celebrate a ‘Dress to Impress’ day; staff and young people were invited to come along and dress up to express themselves and to make a hat out of recycled materials to complement their outfit. We had a red carpet in the sports hall where everyone could come and have their picture taken with their newly created outfit! The maintenance team, Jay and Stuart, won best dressed!
