Well done to the team at Cygnet Wast Hills who have seen the hospital’s rating upgraded to ‘Good’ following the latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Located in Kings Norton, Birmingham, Cygnet Wast Hills provides support for men with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs.

The latest inspection, carried out at the end of August, was a comprehensive inspection looking at all five key lines of enquiry. Inspectors concluded that improvements had been made in a number of areas and as a result rated the service as ‘Good’ across all five domains – Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led.

The full report, published on the CQC website, highlights many areas of positive practice, including:

  • Staff knew and understood service users well and were responsive, supporting their aspirations to live a quality life of their choosing. Service users and their relatives knew what their goals were and where they planned to move to.
  • Service users received kind and compassionate care. Service users and their relatives said that staff looked after them well and treated them with respect.
  • Staff focused on service users’ strengths and promoted what they could do, so individuals had a fulfilling and meaningful everyday life.
  • Service users who had individual ways of communicating, could interact comfortably with staff and others involved in their care and support because staff had the necessary skills to understand them.
  • Staff ensured risks of a closed culture were minimised so that service users received support based on transparency, respect, and inclusivity.
  • Relatives said that staff always responded immediately if people had physical health concerns and medical advice was sought.
  • Some relatives lived a long distance away from Wast Hills. Relatives said staff drove to their home so they could spend time with their relative if they were not able to travel.

Hospital manager Victor Mudarikwa said everybody at the service was happy with the result of the inspection. He added: “I am incredibly pleased with the CQC rating and how far we have come since our previous inspection last year.

“All of the staff at Cygnet Wast Hills work exceptionally hard to provide the highest standard of care and this outcome reflects their level of commitment and dedication towards our service users.

“Every day we all strive to make a positive difference to the men we support and to have our efforts rewarded and recognised in this way makes me feel very proud of the team.”
