Cygnet Manor rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission

The team at Cygnet Manor

Well done to the team at Cygnet Manor who have retained the hospital’s ‘Good’ rating following the latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Cygnet Manor is a high dependency complex care service in Shirebrook, Nottinghamshire, for men with learning disabilities, associated complex needs and who may have behaviours that challenge.

The latest inspection was a comprehensive inspection on 22nd-23rd February 2022 looking at all five key lines of enquiry. Following the inspection the service was rated ‘Good’ across all five domains.

The full report, published on the CQC website, highlights many areas of positive practice, including:

  • Staff saw service users as their equal and created a warm and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Service users felt valued by staff who showed genuine interest in their well-being and quality of life.
  • Staff supported service users with their physical health and encouraged them to live healthier lives. This included access to psychological therapies, support for self-care and the development of everyday living skills.
  • Service users were involved in managing risks to themselves and in taking decisions about how to keep safe. For example, being involved in the creation of their positive behavioural support plan.
  • Staff supported service users with family relationships and community activities outside the service, such as work, education and family relationships.
  • Staff planned and managed discharge well. They liaised well with services that would provide aftercare and were assertive in managing the discharge care pathway.
  • Staff understood and implemented the principles of STOMP (stopping over-medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both) and ensured that medicines were reviewed by prescribers in line with these principles.

Kelly Shortt, Hospital Manager at Cygnet Manor, said “I am delighted that the service has been given a ‘Good’ rating by the CQC. Our staff go above and beyond to provide excellent care and treatment every day so it is wonderful to see their hard work recognized.”

“I am incredibly proud of the team at Cygnet Manor for continuing to provide the best possible care and support to the service users that reside in the service. The team have worked hard and gone above and beyond as we all know that the last couple of years have been a great challenge for individual working in health care. There are so many good things happening in the service and the team is committed to working hard to achieve an outstanding rating in the future.”
