“Alvaston Ward helped me create a better version of me.” – Kate’s Recovery Journey

In this post, Kate* reflects on her journey through Alvaston Ward at Cygnet Hospital Derby. She shares her transition from a place of hopelessness to her new life in supported living, where she now serves as an inspiring role model for others currently on the ward.

This isn’t a typical ‘things got better’, straightforward story.

Sometimes, things don’t go straight. It can get messier, slower, even sideways. My progress came with setbacks, that’s what made it real.

When I first arrived to Alvaston, having spent years in inpatient care, I thought they would give up on me like every other ward. I came with no hope.

Alvaston Ward helped me change my life for the better. Self-harm was my life, I never saw a way out. For a long time, I kept trying to convince the team that self-harm was the best thing for me, I thought I should be allowed to do it, I needed to.

I’m writing this now over 2 years free of self-harm. It had become my identity – I was made up of self-harm. Alvaston helped me find a better version of myself.

Whilst on the ward, I was continually supported to build and use healthier, positive, coping skills. I was given a personalised treatment plan involving therapy and medication. The team were responsive to my needs, and they were always open and honest on my care pathway.

Things didn’t get better straight away, they took time. I wasn’t ‘fixed’, I don’t think anyone ever is, but I can confidently say that Alvaston helped me become positively functioning.

Everyone’s story is different, and Alvaston knows that. They developed individualised care for all – not one treatment plan to fit all.

Alvaston Ward helped me create a better version of me.

I cannot wait for the future.

Kate’s journey hasn’t been a straight line, but her willingness to acknowledge her struggles and learn to accept herself is inspiring. She hasn’t let hurdles hold her back, and the entire team is so proud of the person she has become.Charlotte, Ward Manager at Cygnet Hospital Derby
