Celebrating 35 years of Improving Lives Together

This October marks Cygnet’s 35th anniversary and we are delighted to be celebrating this significant milestone throughout the month with events at our services and we will be taking the opportunity to look back on our many achievements over this time.

Throughout the last 35 years we have grown to help many thousands of people across the country who, without our services, may not have got the quick, quality support they desperately needed.

Cygnet was established in 1988, with the opening of Tupwood Gate and Tabley House Nursing Homes. The following year we opened our first mental health hospitals; Cygnet Hospital Harrogate and Cygnet Hospital Godden Green. Over the years, the company then grew the specialist mental health division, hospital by hospital, developing new facilities organically.

In 2014 we announced our acquisition by Universal Health Services Inc., one of the largest and most respected healthcare providers in the USA, who share our vision and desire to provide the highest quality patient care. Since then, we have grown further and today our expert and highly dedicated care team of more than 11,000 employees support over 7,500 people each year across 150 services to consistently make a positive difference to their lives.

Cygnet Group CEO, Dr Tony Romero, said: “This year we’re celebrating Cygnet’s 35th anniversary. What a wonderful time we have spent, especially in the last few years, together.

“I want to say thank you very much to everybody that has contributed to Cygnet being here for 35 years, helping the NHS, helping the UK, helping all our patients and service users to become better. Improving services, adding capacity, but more importantly, creating a sense of family.

“I think we have been successful because of one thing. The unbelievably dedicated staff that we have working with us.”

Reflecting on the challenges colleagues faced through Covid, he added: “Staff came to work and dedicated their time to ensure that the patients and service users were safe, looked after, and you cannot measure that. That is something that will be with me forever, as one of the proudest moments of my professional life.

“In the moment of difficulty, in the darkest moment, as a company, as individuals, as a family, we shone. We came through and we helped each other.

“I want to say thank you very much to all of the Cygnet staff.”

This is a significant milestone for us and a celebration of our legacy, our journey, who we are today and our exciting future ahead. We are sure the next 35 years will be as exciting and rewarding as the first and we hope you will join us in commemorating 35 years of excellence.
