Lister Ward is Cygnet Hospital Bierley’s specialist mental health acute service for men. The service provides a safe and stabilising environment for individuals who are experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission.
Our recovery-focused approach is underpinned by the Safewards model, ensuring a collaborative and proactive daily practice. This commitment to safety and engagement is supported by a variety of therapeutic spaces, including dedicated activity areas and sensory-informed spaces on the ward, as well as a range of off-ward therapy rooms.

On Lister Ward we support men over the age of 18 who:
- Are detained under the Mental Health Act or informal
- May have diagnoses including mental illness, personality disorder, psychosis, bi-polar disorder and / or schizophrenia
- May have complex needs including self-harm or substance misuse
