Gender: Male
Age: 18+
Beds: 15
The service has been designed to support men with complex neuropsychiatric needs whose combination of neurological, cognitive, behavioural, mental health, and risk needs makes conventional community placement difficult to achieve or sustain. Cygnet Afon Las is registered as a mental health hospital, and can support individuals detained under forensic and civil sections of the Mental Health Act.
We provide a safe, structured and least restrictive environment for individuals who cannot be supported within traditional community or nursing placements, offering psychiatric and psychologically informed care with a focus on risk management, dignity, and quality of life.
The people we support:
- Men aged 18+, diagnosed with:
- Established or suspected Acquired Brain Injury, including those sustained through trauma, anoxia, stroke, tumour, virus or infection
- Neurodegenerative condition such as Huntington’s Disease
- Alcohol-related Brain Disease
- Legal frameworks including Mental Health Act – both forensic and civil sections
- May present with behaviours that challenge
- May have a history of repeated placement breakdowns
- May require a medication titration programme
- May present with risks including: absconding, self-harm and/or substance misuse
Our Approach
We recognise that traditional metrics, such as speed of discharge, do not capture the full scope of recovery for everyone. For many individuals, meaningful outcomes are defined by long-term stability, enhanced safety, functional maintenance, and reduced distress. Our approach prioritises sustainable quality of life over rapid transition.
Set within a countryside environment, the service focuses on ordinary living rather than institutional routine. People are supported to develop individual patterns of daily life, with meaningful occupation forming an integral part of the therapeutic model.
Workshops, horticulture, animal husbandry, maintenance of the environment, cooking and other practical and creative activities provide opportunities for responsibility, achievement, routine, and connection.
Activities are adapted to the individual’s abilities, interests, risks and aspirations, allowing people to contribute to the life of the service rather than simply receive care within it.
Where further progression becomes possible, it will be actively supported. Where long-term placement remains the most appropriate outcome, the emphasis remains on maintaining potential, maximising autonomy and ensuring that life continues to have purpose, choice and quality.
This everyday living environment is underpinned by specialist interdisciplinary neuropsychiatric oversight. Individual formulation, positive risk management and robust clinical governance enable appropriate freedoms and opportunities to balance with the protection of the individual and others.
