Goals, Glory and Great Teamwork at Health Care South Football Tournament

Eight teams from our Health Care South services recently battled it out in the first southern staff football tournament.

Hosted at The Lions Centre in Millwall, staff from Cygnet Brunel, Cygnet Churchill, Cygnet Hospital Beckton, Cygnet Hospital Harrow, Cygnet Hospital Maidstone, Cygnet Hospital Stevenage, Cygnet Hospital Taunton and Cygnet Hospital Woking took to the pitch in an attempt to take home the glory.

With over 200 colleagues in attendance, the seven-a-side tournament was full of excitement, friendly competition and nail-biting action. The final saw Brunel and Churchill go head-to-head, with the Bristol-side securing an impressive 2-0 win.

The event was organised by Jamie Green, Cygnet Brunel Hospital Manager and team captain, and Keith Soper, Operations Director – South, whose connections with Millwall FC helped secure the wonderful playing field.

Jamie said: “Interest for the football tournament came from our South West 11-a-side games as well as excitement from the national five-a-side tournament.

“Teams got to compete with each other but more importantly network and get to know our colleagues across the south. It was an absolutely fantastic day and a huge thanks to Millwall and Keith for supporting the venue.”

Following the success of the inaugural competition, Keith and Jamie are hoping to welcome even more teams next year and have their eyes on a North v South derby.

Keith said: “It was good to bring colleagues together who wouldn’t normally get to see people from other sites and departments and give people a chance to experience a team-building environment in good facilities.”

Millwall Community Trust CEO Sean Daly said: “It was fantastic to welcome health care staff to The Lions Centre for a great day of football.

“A huge thank you to Keith Soper for organising the tournament and to everyone who took part in making it such an enjoyable occasion.  We’re proud to provide a space where people can come together, build relationships and enjoy the benefits that sport brings.”
