Cygnet Aspen Clinic raise money for the National Autistic Society

Patients and staff at Cygnet Aspen Clinic recently completed a 5K sponsored walk at Rother Valley Country Park, raising over £150 for the National Autistic Society.

Rother Valley is a haven for wildlife, as well as a beautiful park offering abundant activities including water sports and other outdoor pursuits.

Five enthusiastic patients joined the occupational therapist and activity coordinator in this beautiful recreational location, enjoying the views of open water, grassland, and footpaths. They were keen to raise money, as well as raising an awareness for National Autistic Society. An amount of £157.51 was raised in total.

Autistic people can face discrimination and barriers across all sectors of society. After completing this walk, a discussion was facilitated whereby a guest speaker came to discuss how autism affects him. Other patients and staff gave valuable contributions to the discussion, including this poem:

“I see the world in a different way,

And I have learned that that is ok.

I have my own little quirks,

But also a lot of perks.

Maybe I sometimes seem a little shy,

But that doesn’t mean that I don’t try.

Don’t change who you are,

You may see the world differently,

But you can go far.”

It is crucial that autistic people can discuss how they feel they are affected. What guidance and support they get to overcome those barriers, along with opportunities to explore their interests, develop skills and build friendships for fulfilled lives.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the sponsored walk, and generous donations to raise funds for National Autistic Society, and for having the courage to share their experiences.
