Lived experience insights at Cygnet Bury Dunes’ CPD Day

Cygnet Bury Dunes recently welcomed PCREF Carer Lead and Carer Ambassador Matthew McKenzie to speak at their Nurses CPD Day.

Matthew shared his personal lived‑experience as a carer and reflected on how these experiences continue to shape his understanding of mental health care.

During the session, he introduced the Patient Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) and spoke about why involving carers, families and people with lived experience is essential in improving services and promoting equality in mental health settings.

The day also included a range of professional development sessions for nurses, giving staff the chance to refresh their knowledge, build confidence and reflect on how they can embed inclusive, person‑centred practice into everyday care.

Matthew shared that he felt proud to contribute to conversations that will help strengthen care at Cygnet. He highlighted that while frameworks like PCREF provide structure, it is lived experience, openness and collaboration that drive real change.
