Cygnet Hospital Derby scores with World Cup-themed Carers’ BBQ

On Saturday, 18 July 2026, Cygnet Hospital Derby hosted its highly anticipated annual Carers’ BBQ, bringing together service users, staff, and families for a vibrant celebration. This year’s event featured an energetic World Cup theme, combining sports-inspired fun with meaningful community engagement.

The celebratory day welcomed service users from all three of the hospital’s wards, alongside up to 30 dedicated carers. Attendees enjoyed a packed itinerary of summer highlights, including:

  • A refreshing mock tail stand and slushie machine.
  • A traditional ice cream van and fresh popcorn machine.
  • An interactive animal safari experience.
  • A lively karaoke session led enthusiastically by service users and the facility’s music therapist.

Collaborative teamwork was at the heart of the event’s success. The Occupational Therapy team worked closely with service users to bake fresh cakes and create handmade crafts for sale. Combined with a popular Tombola, the day successfully raised up t0 £100 for JustForDogs. This charity holds a special place at Cygnet Derby, as service users visit the service fortnightly on Friday mornings for dog walking sessions voluntarily.

Beyond the entertainment, the day served as an important hub for resources and support. The Social Work team hosted an information stand, providing vital safeguarding guidance and carers’ information booklets. Members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) were also present throughout the day, offering support and remaining on hand to answer questions from families and visitors.

The day concluded with overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff, carers, and service users alike. Attendees praised both the diverse itinerary and the incredible collaborative effort across departments that made the celebratory event possible.
