Jane’s Story

When Jane came to us

When Jane* transitioned into Nightingale, she immediately displayed challenging behaviours in the home and in public. Behaviours included damage to property and self harm. Behaviours in public put Jane at risk and at times involved the Police and Coast Guard.

Jane’s BMI was very high and her activity levels were very low. She also displayed inappropriate behaviour on public transport. All expressive communication required meticulous planning from a speech and language Therapist. Jane’s interest levels were not age appropriate and interactions, meaning engagements with peers required close monitoring by all staff.

Where she is now

Jane’s maladaptive behaviours have reduced, she has learnt new skills to manage areas of emotion and self regulation, plus is now applying new learnt skills across many environments to break through compartmentalisation barriers. She is now attending college, is engaging positively with her peers plus has joined a local drama group and youth club.

Jane now uses the train to access her college course. She is following a healthy eating plan and regularly accesses a local gym and with peers walks along the local beach. Expressive language continues to improve, with support from our total communication support strategies and in house multi-disciplinary team professionals.
