Young person helps shape CAMHS care at national forum

Jessie, a young person with lived experience, joined Jamie-Leigh Dakin (Quality Lead) and Fabiana Manetta (Positive and Safe Lead) from Cygnet Hospital Sheffield, to deliver a powerful presentation at the Quality Network for Inpatient CAMHS (QNIC) Annual Forum 2026. The session explored how a new model for CAMHS Intensive Services is supporting trauma-informed practice.

Jessie and his parents travelled hundreds of miles to join us for this event for which the team are eternally grateful.

The presentation shared findings from the six-month evaluation of the service, including learning from the transition period with a focus on how the new model has positively impacted the use of restrictive practices, including physical restraint, seclusion and rapid tranquilisation. It included the reduction in length of stay and encouraging improvement per day in patient outcome measures.

Jessie spoke about his lived experience including the challenges around transition and how services can improve this experience for young people. His parents and carers, Emma and John, also shared their experience of the challenges of admissions, transitions and the importance of staying connected through meaningful time together away from the ward. The session also featured examples of good practice, including initiatives to strengthen co-production and create more sensory-friendly environments.

The presentation was well-received with audience members describing the pilot as ‘inspiring’ and a ‘great example of innovation’. Jessie and his parents shared their gratitude for being given the opportunity to help others and feel heard. Their involvement supporting Cygnet to understand how to improve service for out-of-area and neurodiverse young people and their families has been invaluable.
