Cygnet Views celebrate World Down Syndrome Day

The team at Cygnet Views recently celebrated World Down Syndrome Day by wearing odd socks. It is celebrated on the 21st day of the third month. The ‘Lots of Socks’ odd socks on this day are worn as a gesture of solidarity, advocacy and equality.

People with Downs Syndrome are born with an extra chromosome. It’s an unexplained genetic phenomenon that makes them unique. A typical person each carries pairs of chromosomes numbered 1-23 making up 46 in total. A person with Downs Syndrome has the same AND an extra chromosome specifically chromosome 21 giving them 3 ! Hence why WDS day is recognised on 21/3 (21st of March).

Why socks ? Chromosomes actually look like little socks. 23 pairs of little sock shapes plus an extra one! One odd sock!
