My Schizophrenia Journey

Charmaine

In our latest blog Charmaine, a resident at Hansa Lodge, talks about how schizophrenia has affected her and her ten year journey with the condition.

It all began by a doctor giving me medication for chest pains that ended up causing me to hallucinate the next morning.

My mum gave me my tablets at the required time, at the family home. It felt like I was being controlled by the spirits by going in my right arm and typing on my laptop. I was getting possessed in the female toilets, crying and saying ‘get off me, come on out of it’. It happened twice in there.

This was at the end of March 2012, as well as the beginning of April 2012 when I became very poorly and sick.

I was that bad I ended up in a mental health hospital in Ipswich for four months then, once discharged with a formal diagnosis of schizophrenia, into my own supported living flat with staff on site 24/7. My social worker found me that accommodation in Ipswich. Everything was fine – doing normal every day to day activities, going on day trips and going to the Mersea Island Festival.

Then in 2016, I had a particular voice in my brain and I was easily distracted by this. I recognised her as she is a family friend.

During the time of my hallucinations the police stopped me outside Ipswich County Library. A voice must’ve been in my brain for them to know my whereabouts because I went outside the library to see if my mate was alright.

I continued to have problems. One day I was on my own at the new amusements in Felixstowe minding my own business, just chilling outside having a drink. Then a bad spirit got in my right arm and started beating me really bad.

Then problems got worse at my supported living home. One day in my bedroom, I was tidying up my bedroom then out of nowhere…that same bad spirit picked up my plastic rounders bat and started destroying everything in my bedroom, the dining table and my very nice looking mirror was smashed everywhere on the floor.

My keyworker called for help from somewhere. Then the doctors came out to see me and asked questions, but I had to write everything down on paper because of my croaky voice.

In November 2017 I ended up in another mental health hospital where I got treated and given a diagnosis of Psychosis. I was in that hospital for three months then discharged straight into another supported accommodation.

Since been placed on certain medication them bad spirits have stopped doing things physically to me. I can’t remember when it actually stopped though because I was able to carry on normally.

Now that I am well again, I feel as though I can go out more independently and be more independent at my camping holiday without having this specific spirit causing me harm again. Nearly all the spirits have vanished now.

This is thanks to my new home at Hansa Lodge, I had a really nice Care home manager who left but I have a new Care home manager Bev who has been so supportive and caring and so understanding, as well as my care staff.

They have supported me to go to my appointments and encouraged me.

And it’s also thanks to my Trainee Doctor that done this for me by giving me calming medication in the morning. Ever since being on this type of medication I have then found myself in a much better state of mind. No more anger problems.
