Psychological Services and Therapies

The Psychology Department undertakes specialist psychological assessments, including personality, risk and neuropsychological assessments.

Based on these assessments and clinical interviews, individual formulation and recommendations are drawn up. This contributes to individualised care planning, and follows a recovery approach which aims to rehabilitate holistically. It follows the principle that individuals are more than their offending background and/or mental health difficulties, enhancing pro-social attitudes and psychological wellbeing.

The Psychology Department also provide individual, group and family interventions. A range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches are offered, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment, motivational interviewing, solution focused approaches and family work.

The Psychology Department also carries out staff training, reflective practice and consultation to professionals and teams. Psychologists regularly attend multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds and Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings in order to inform the psychological aspects of care and to encourage psychological thinking in all aspects of patient care.
